Kogin, a type of sashiko, was born in the Tsugaru district of Aomori prefecture in the Edo period as a way to embroider fabric with tight stitching to reinforce and keep warm. Since the technique relies on counting an exact number of holes along the cloth, the needles are long enough to be threaded through the holes in one movement. In addition, the needle is stronger and the eye wider than the Sashiko needle to match the "Kogin thread," which is thicker than the Sashiko thread.
