What is 'washi' ?

In Japan, "washi"means "Japanese paper."

Wa (和) = Japanese or harmony

Shi (紙) = paper

Washi is traditionally handmade from the inner bark of native plants like kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, or gampi. It's known for being lightweight, strong, and durable, and is used in everything from calligraphy, origami, and crafts to lanterns, shoji screens, and stationery. Unlike Western paper made from wood pulp, washi retains longer fibres, giving it its unique texture and resilience. It's not just a material—it’s a symbol of Japanese craft, aesthetics, and cultural heritage.
