Gauze cotton has excellent water absorption which makes it an ideal cloth for the kitchen. In Japan cotton cloths are quite common to use as bench and crockery wipes. Even modern synthetic alternatives have not replaced interest in using cotton in the kitchen.
If you don't want to dirty them, they can be used as hand drying cloths, pot holders, or even bathroom cloths.
